Cologne travel tips
Cologne is located in the German State of Westphalia, where your holiday travel will take you through a landscape dotted with steeply wooded hills, imposing hilltop castles, terraced vineyards and tiny villages.
Regarded as the cultural capital of Germany's Rhineland, the city of Cologne is best viewed from the deck of a river cruiser.
Plenty of Rhine cruise firms offer tourists an opportunity to see the sights, sip wine and spend a lot of money... travel isn't cheap in Germany.
Cologne is situated in a picturesque and wealthy region of Germany and is central to Paris, London, Hamburg, Stuttgart and just about everywhere else in Europe.
The city is regarded throughout the continent as an ideal conference venue and there are various industry and cultural conventions during the year.
Cologne's history dates back to the Roman era. The city was an important medieval trading post and is nowadays a major industrial and commercial centre of Germany.
Its skyline is dominated by the towering twin spires of the Dom, one of Europe's best known cathedrals.
Work began on the Dom-Cologne Cathedral in 1248 but wasn't completed until 1880. The Gothic influence and vertical lines are dominant despite the centuries of evolving architectural trends.
In the chapel below its organ loft, the Dom houses a life-size cross which, at more than a thousand years, is thought to be the oldest in existence.
Food in Cologne has its own flavour, taking its nuances from French rather than German traditions.
The city enjoys warm summers and mild winters with average temperatures varying from 1 degree Celsius in January to 20 degrees Celsius in July and August, which is the best time of year for holiday travel. Average annual rainfall is 760 millimetres (30 inches).
And if you've ever wondered about 'eau de cologne... yes, it was invented and is still made in Cologne.
