Neuschwanstein Castle information

King Ludwig II ordered that Neuschwanstein Castle be larger than life, with huge spires towering into the air and revolutionary facilities such as running water on each floor, flushing toilets, hot water in kitchens and bathrooms, and a warm-air heating system.

For this he became known as Mad King Ludwig of Neuschwanstein Castle. The king was already know to have hallucinations and display eccentricities such as saluting a tree.

Construction of Neuschwanstein Castle on the side of a mountain in the German Alps of Bavaria began in 1869 and came to a sudden halt 17 years later on June 13, 1886... the day King Ludwig died.

Ludgwig's death was attributed at the time to suicide by drowning in the knee-deep waters of a lake near the castle. However, his family has never allowed forensic examination of the body, which is claimed to have two bullet wounds - suggesting he was assassinated by parties fearful that his eccentric behaviour would bankrupt Bavaria.

Six weeks after his death, the castle became a museum you can still visit during your holiday travel through Germany and Bavaria.

Each room in Neuschwanstein Castle is decorated with paintings depicting scenes from Richard Wagner's operas.

Concerts are held each September in a theatre occupying the entire fourth floor which Ludwig built so Wagner's operas could be performed.

During his holiday travel in Germany, Walt Disney saw the stunning Neuschwanstein Castle and decided to build the replica which is synonymous with Disneyland.

There is a larger concentration of medieval castles along the Rhine than anywhere else in the world, and the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is listed as a World Heritage site for its significance in history and legend over the past two millennia.
